Pay It Forward

Earlier this year, the Oakes Junior High students, along with their teachers and administration, started a “Random Acts of Kindness, Pay It Forward” program for local businesses. The school honored all city employees as the first recipients and provided a lunch for those employees. They were in turn asked to perform a random act of kindness for another business and keep the chain going. To date, the following businesses have been recipients and then paid it forward to another group.

  • City of Oakes Employees
  • Otter Tail Power
  • Starion Financial
  • Ptacek Financial Services, PC
  • First State Bank
  • Oakes Truck & Trailer
  • James Valley Grain/Wheat Growers
  • CHI Oakes Hospital
  • Good Samaritan Society - Oakes

On March 22nd, the employees of James Valley Grain and Wheat Growers sponsored a fundraiser dinner with the proceeds being given to CHI Oakes Hospital to meet local patient care equipment needs. As a result of the community’s generosity, along with matching funds from those two businesses and funds from the Sharing Success Program through CoBank, a contribution of $6,674 was given to the hospital. Stretchers in the emergency department have already been updated with these funds, and additional patient care needs will be addressed in the near future.

To continue the acts of kindness, hospital staff provided cookies during an event held at Oakes Good Samaritan Society during an afternoon event for staff and residents, but wanted to help in a bigger way as well. The other portion of the hospital’s “Pay It Forward” will be to help raise funds for a display case. The family of Sue McLean, long time physical therapist in the community, donated her collection of Dickens Village pieces to OGSC so that residents and others could enjoy them for years to come. CHI Oakes Hospital will use proceeds from the Sue McLean 5K Fun Run/Walk held during Irrigation Days this year to help make this a reality. Registration forms will be available at the hospital, at the front office of Oakes Good Samaritan Society, online at, or from the Chamber office. Please consider being a part of this “Race for the Case” event! There will also be a “No Sweat” option if you want to help, but aren’t a runner!

Thank you to the Oakes Public Schools, James Valley Grain, Wheat Growers and all who have participated to make this great community event continue. Thank you to the junior high students who inspired us to “Be the solution, Not the problem!”
